Wisdom teeth (the third molars) eruption is an important milestone that takes place during adolescence age (between 17 to 21). This is one of the important changes that takes place in your mouth with age and for this reason, wisdom teeth are named so -as the saying goes – “with age comes wisdom.”

When wisdom teeth come out normally in an apt position, they help you chew food. It is normal to have some discomfort when wisdom teeth appear, but if you experience pain, you must see your dentist immediately.

Impaction

There could be some wisdom tooth problems if a wisdom tooth comes through the wrong position owing to a lack of space for it to erupt. In some cases, while they come through the gums they may get trapped under the gums or in the jaws. This is known as impaction.

Wisdom tooth impaction is of two types: partial impaction (the crown is visible partially) and complete impaction – The tooth is fully impacted). Whether it is a partial or complete impaction, the tooth can grow at an angle towards the adjacent tooth or the back of the tooth. In some cases, wisdom teeth can also grow at an angle to the neighboring tooth as if the tooth lies down within the jawbone. Sometimes, the impacted tooth can grow straight down or up – but remain trapped in the jawbone.

See your dentist if you encounter any pain. Your dentist will monitor your mouth for the following signs:

Improper positioning of the erupting wisdom tooth can lead to entrapment of food particles and the growth of bacteria that cause the development of cavities.

When wisdom teeth don’t come properly it will be difficult for you to floss between your wisdom teeth and the molars next to them.

Wisdom teeth that have come out partially can provide an ideal environment for the bacteria to enter the gums and cause infection. In this case, you will have pain, swelling, and stiffness in the jaw.

In some cases, wisdom teeth don’t come through normally causing damage to neighboring teeth. Some experts believe that this could lead to overcrowding.

If you see your dentist regularly, they will evaluate your overall dental health and the health of your wisdom teeth. If the need arises, they will take X-rays and evaluate your case based on the symptoms and provide the best course of treatment.
